The SurfBeam system is a two-way satellite system that enables high speed two-way Internet and multi-media communication services to residential and small business end-users over conventional geostationary satellites.
A key element of the SurfBeam system is its adoption of the cable modem industries Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) with minor modifications to support operation over satellite.
This allows SurfBeam to leverage existing cable modem chipset - already in million unit production - in the remote terminal IDU, and to leverage both hardware and the extensive body of application packages that have been developed to support million subscribers cable modem networks.
The system is a hub-spoke network through which low cost Remote Terminals access the Internet via a centralized Gateway and its best suited for end-user Internet access solution.
